What drugs are safe for treating pregnancy-related nausea?

Paula Greer
Midwifery Nursing

As a midwife, I have prescribed Phenergan, Zofran and a combination of vitamin B6 and unasom for my patients. Every patients care is individualized. For some just some diet changes and holistic measures are enough. For others meds may be necessary. Be sure to share with your healthcare provider your concerns to come up with a plan that will help you get safely through this stage of your pregnancy.

Drugs commonly used to treat nausea during pregnancy include the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) category B drugs metoclopramide (Reglan), ondansetron (Zofran), and the FDA category C drug promethazine (Phenergan). A recent survey found that the nausea medications most commonly prescribed by obstetricians are ondansetron and promethazine. These are available as pills, liquids, dissolvable tablets, and rectal suppository forms.
