Gaining too much weight early in pregnancy increases your risk for two pregnancy-related conditions, says nurse midwife Paula Greer. Find out what they are by watching this video.
When you're gaining too much weight, you are really putting a hardship on your body. Your cardiac output increases 50% while you're pregnant circulating all that extra blood to feed and nourish your baby. If you're already gaining weight in the beginning of the pregnancy, this may lead you into the complications of gestational diabetes or gestational hypertension.
It's about having a healthy mom so that she can have a healthy baby that is important, and why it's so important to discuss your weight gain and all your healthcare issues with your OB/GYN or midwife.
Paula Greer is a graduate of the nurse midwifery program at Georgetown University and currently working for Baltimore Washington Medical Center in a faculty practice.
