You may have an infection. If you have an infection like mastitis (which is normally caused when bacteria from the baby's mouth infects the breast), you may need antibiotics. Hot showers, compresses, and massage can help soothe the pain. Cool cabbage leaves (steamed, then poked with a fork) worn under your bra can also help relieve pain from engorgement.
