How does Lyrica treat nerve pain from shingles?

Anti-seizure medications, such as Lyrica (pregabalin), are highly effective in treating nerve pain that follows the healing of shingles. A viral infection, shingles is caused by the reappearance of the same virus that causes chicken pox. This virus (varicella zoster) remains in the body after your first infection of chicken pox and can reappear later in life due to a weakened immune system or with age. Shingles can travel through nerves to cause severely painful skin rashes throughout the body. The infection is treated with antiviral medication, but Lyrica can relieve nerve pain caused by viral damage to the nervous system. It does this by reducing the number of electrical impulses in the brain that can cause a sensation of pain. Because damaged nerves often send out "extra" pain messages, antiseizure medications are effective in reducing the sensation of pain while the body heals.
