During your first visit to the doctor, a pelvic exam will check for any important abnormalities. The doctor will check your vagina and cervix for any sign of infection or deformity that could pose a problem to your pregnancy. A Pap smear will test for cervical cancer, which could be dangerous for you at this time. A pelvic exam is only necessary during the first visit of the first trimester and again later in the pregnancy.
