Who is most affected by glaucoma?

People most affected by glaucoma include the following groups:
  • people who are over age 60
  • African Americans
  • Asians
  • Hispanics
  • people with high blood pressure
  • people who have a family history of glaucoma 

African Americans are the most at risk for developing glaucoma. Their types of glaucoma are also four times more likely to result in permanent blindness than Caucasians. Mexican Americans are also higher at risk than Caucasians. The reason that these darker-skinned people groups are the more at risk for developing this disease is unknown.
