Hi, I'm Dr. Miller. You are always hearing about the best diet to prevent specific diseases, diets to prevent heart disease, diets for diabetes, or diets to kick cancer to the curb. Do you really need a different diet for everything? No, the good news is, that eating the same range of healthy foods helps protect you from a range of ills.
In a recent study, researchers scrutinized the diets of folks in China to uncover clues about diet and comorbidity. Comorbidity means having more than one disease at a time. Here's what they found. Healthy disease free folk and those with only one condition, ate lots more fruits and vegetables from those who had two or more disease,
heart disease, diabetes, or arthiritis. And, disease free study participants said, why use this many whole grains, at sick folks? In particular, these healthy folks loaded up on whole grains other than wheat and rice such as oats, corn, rye, barley and sorghum, that's because whole grains are chocked full of disease fighting fiber, iron, magnesium, and phosphorus.
