What should I do in the morning to avoid smoking while quitting?

Mornings can be your enemy when you decide to quit smoking. Many smokers have a cigarette the moment their feet touch the floor. The addictive nature of nicotine causes an intense craving after 6-8 hours of sleep. To deal with morning cravings, put a plan in place that keeps you from falling into that old habit. There will be little you can do to change your waking environment because you still need to be in your bed and in your bedroom. But you can create some detours through distraction. Before you go to bed, take an inventory of all the things that make you want to smoke. Put them out of sight. Then make a plan to do something for the first hour of waking that requires a high degree of attention. This will pull your focus away from smoking. Be creative. The more intense the activity, the better. Brush your teeth and drink a big glass of water as soon as you can. If you would normally have a cigarette with a cup of coffee or tea, make sure you drink it fast, or take the cup to different location in the house.

Smoking is often associated with doing other things, like drinking a cup of coffee. One way to avoid the urge for a cigarette in the morning is to change your routine a bit. If you always have a cigarette with your morning coffee in the kitchen, for instance, try having a cup of tea in the living room instead.
Here are the following points:
Plan a different wake-up routine. Take your attention off smoking right away. Be sure no cigarettes are available. Begin each day with deep breathing and one or more glasses of water. Make a list of early morning triggers, and avoid them. Begin each day with a preplanned activity that will keep you busy for an hour or more. It will keep your mind and body busy so that you don't think about smoking.
