Azelaic acid is one of the newer treatments to be approved for treating rosacea. This drug works by lowering inflammation, which helps to reduce the presence of acne-like bumps. Azelaic acid is a gel or cream that's applied to the skin. Doctors usually prescribe it for mild to moderate rosacea. Azelaic acid works at least as well as an older medication, metronidazole, though some doctors believe it may be more effective.
