Why do people get migraines?

Doctors are not entirely sure how a person gets a migraine or why certain things trigger them. In the past, they thought that migraines were caused by blood vessels dilating. And, this may be a contributor the pain and may cause an aura-such as lines, zigzag patterns, blind spots or colors-which is visible before migraine pain.

More recent evidence, however, suggests that increased sensitivity to pain and the release of chemicals happening at the same time, which causes most migraine pain. Most recently, doctors have defined migraine as a neurobiological condition.
