How effective are drugs for erectile dysfunction?

Since the late 1990s millions of men have taken pills for erectile dysfunction (ED). Viagra, Levitra and Cialis have been used safely and effectively. These drugs block a protein (or enzyme) called PDE-5. Blocking this protein increases the erection. But the drugs do not work for every man. About 30-50% of men fail to get an erection with these pills. If you don't get somewhat of an erection without taking a pill, the pill won't work for you.

Another thing to keep in mind is the side effects. The pills can cause facial flushing, headache, vision problems, nausea, backaches and more. This might limit your satisfaction. A good urologist can help you decide if pills for erectile dysfunction are a good choice for you.

Drugs that treat erectile dysfunction are popular because they work remarkably well. They increase the amount of nitric oxide in the blood, which relaxes the arteries and allows blood to flow to the penis. Those drugs work very effectively for that purpose. I don't mind people using it, but I do get concerned when we think that's the solution. Because if you medicate yourself and get over a problem, that's not the same as reversing the problem.
