Can multiple sclerosis cause erectile dysfunction?

Dr. Mehmet Oz, MD
Cardiology (Cardiovascular Disease)
Erectile dysfunction is a common problem among men who have multiple sclerosis. This insidious disease attacks the protective material that surrounds a nerve cell, known as the myelin sheath. The resulting nerve damage can cause  muscle weakness, among other problems. Achieving an erection requires nerves to control muscles in the penis, so it's no surprise that men with multiple sclerosis often develop erectile dysfunction.

Fortunately, there is good evidence that men with multiple sclerosis who have erectile dysfunction respond well to treatment. If you have multiple sclerosis and an unsatisfying sex life, talk to your doctor.
Multiple sclerosis, a disease in which a person's own immune system attacks the nerves in his brain and spinal cord, can cause erectile dysfunction. Damage to these nerves weakens the signals that must travel to the penis to cause an erection. Indirectly multiple sclerosis may cause erectile dysfunction by making a person feel too tired for sex, and by causing anxiety and stress, which also hamper sexual performance.
