Excellent question and something to pay close attention to as this may happen when using the elliptical trainer as well.  The main reason that this occurs is due to the length of time your foot stays in one position.  When using the bike your foot moves very little and essentially becomes part of the pedal.  When this happens, the blood does not circulate to your foot as well causing the numbness.

A few things to try include:  try loosening your shoelaces, try wiggling your toes throughout your workout, or try to move your feet every 5-10 minutes.
