When is the average age of postmenopause onset?

The average age for achieving postmenopause in North America today is 51 years. This age has remained constant since the Roman Empire. Postmenopause is more significant now, however, than even just 100 years ago, because of the dramatic increase in longevity. An American woman in 2009 has an average life expectancy of 84 years. For many women, this means 30 years or more spent in postmenopause.
