What are the symptoms of kidney cancer?

In the early stages, renal cell cancer usually causes no clear signs or symptoms. As the tumor grows, symptoms may include blood in the urine or a lump/mass in the area of the back near the kidneys. Less often, people may experience constant pain in the side near a kidney, high blood pressure or anemia. These symptoms can also be caused by less serious problems such as a benign (non-cancerous) cyst or an infection. If you have any of these symptoms, check with your doctor or healthcare clinician. He or she will do some tests to find out what is causing your problem.

There are rarely symptoms in the early stages of kidney cancer. In later stages the symptoms may include blood in the urine, back pain just below the ribs that doesn’t go away, unexplainable weight loss, fatigue and intermittent fever.

Symptoms of kidney cancer may not be noticeable until the disease has progressed passed its first stages. Most commonly, the first symptom people notice is blood in their urine, which may cause urine to turn pink, brown, or red. Another common symptom is a constant pain in your side, right below the ribs. Weight loss, fever, and fatigue are some other common symptoms. Sometimes, kidney cancer will cause a lump in your abdomen that can be felt from the outside. These symptoms may be similar to those caused by other conditions, so it's important to talk to your doctor if you experience any symptoms.
