Are Assisted Suicide and Euthanasia the Same?

Read Transcript

Assisted suicide is different from euthanasia. Assisted suicide is something we like to call physician aide in dying, and that means, a patient who is terminally ill and is going to die shortly, is given medication that will hasten that death. Euthanasia again is a doctor injecting or giving a patient medication that would cause a patient to die.

With assisted suicide, or physician aide in dying, the patient takes the medication themselves of their own volition, and they can choose to not take the medication.
