How one homeless veteran got help and cured her hepatitis C
“It was years before I even learned information about there being a Hep C cure.” -Pat, hepatitis C patient

If I had not gotten access to this cure study, I don't believe that I would have received access
to the cure because it was so expensive. And I still did not have Veterans' Health Care. [MUSIC PLAYING]
It was difficult for me to get treatment because I had two chronic conditions
that I was diagnosed with at the same time on top of living with homelessness and substance use. How do I have medication adherence
while not having access to a safe space to take those pills? So it was years before I even learned information
about there being a hep C cure. I was in the HERO study with UCSF and they were trying to prove that people who contract hep
C can still be under the influence of substances and still get cured of hep C, as well as not contract hep
C again. I had a nonprofit here in San Francisco come out and find me at the recovery space that I was at.
They told me that they would come and walk me to see their clinic if I was interested.
They definitely, like, touched my heart and helped me learn that it does require communities of people
to do this work. [MUSIC PLAYING]
