Getting diagnosed with hepatitis C while experiencing homelessness
“I found that I got my energy back … I’m a personal trainer, and that means the world to me.” -Pat, hepatitis C patient

[MUSIC PLAYING] I would just like sit at that park and not move,
because I didn't have the energy to.
When I went to go get tested, I was going to a youth meal night to get food. And they were giving away gift cards.
But instead, I got a diagnosis of hep C. I experienced so much pain, so much chronic pain and chronic infections
while also living homeless. When I would use substances via needle injection, I would experience as abscesses wounds that would not
heal as fast, infections that was really affecting my capacity to even get through the day.
It was hard for me to even walk down a block. And then when I went into recovery, it wasn't until I started taking the medication
that I started feeling what my body had went through from living with hep C. I found that, like, I got my energy back.
And I'm a personal trainer. And that means the world to me, like, to be able to run the distance, to love my body.
And instead of feeling broken because of an illness, like that, that's part of the reason why I give back to so many different communities to this day.
It's because when I took that cure, I felt so much healing in that moment, I just wanted more.
