Possible side effects of fiber supplement use include gas, bloating, and stomach cramps or distension (swelling from internal pressure). Tell your doctor if you are taking supplements as they may interact with other supplements, medicines, or vitamins. It is possible that fiber supplement use will delay or reduce how your body absorbs other medications. It may be good practice to take other drugs anywhere from one to four hours after you have taken fiber supplements. When taking these supplements, you must drink plenty of water in order to avoid constipation. Though rare, it is possible to experience an allergic reaction. Stop taking supplements and seek emergency medical attention if you experience symptoms of an allergy. Allergy symptoms may include hives, rash, itching, vomiting, chest pain, trouble breathing, or trouble swallowing.
