A pantaloon hernia is caused by an indirect hernia developing at the same time as a direct inguinal hernia. A direct inguinal hernia pushes through the abdomen wall and into the groin. An indirect inguinal hernia pushes through the abdomen wall, into the inguinal canal, and runs along the length of the inguinal canal. When the indirect inguinal hernia pushes all the way through the inguinal canal and into the scrotum and testicles, swelling will develop in these areas. As with other abdominal wall hernias, intra-abdominal pressure can cause openings to develop within the abdomen wall. Continued or frequent pressure can cause part of the intestine or another abdomen organ to bulge through a wall and into the groin area.
