Total parenteral nutrition (TPN), a liquid nutrient solution that comes in a bag, should be stored in the refrigerator. However, if your doctor gives you several days’ supply, you can keep some of the bags in the freezer. You'll need to move a frozen bag to the refrigerator 24 hours before you need it so that it can thaw properly, and then bring it to room temperature two to four hours before you actually use it. Never refreeze TPN liquid, and never heat the bag in the microwave.
Make sure you check the expiration date on the bag before you use it, and throw it away if it has expired. Do not use the solution if the bag of TPN has leaks, a change in color or floating particles.
