What increases my risk for postherpetic neuralgia?

You are only at risk for postherpetic neuralgia if you have had shingles; having had chicken pox puts you at risk for shingles. However, age can further increase your risk of developing the condition. On average, only one in ten people who have had shingles develop postherpetic neuralgia following an outbreak. But that risk increases as high as 50 percent for those who are over the age of 50. If you are 50 or older, you can lower the risk by having the shingles vaccine for the varicella-zoster virus, even if you have had chicken pox or shingles in the past.
