Ear injuries are common in young children. How you care for the injury, depends on the injury itself.

For small, shallow scratches or cuts, clean thoroughly and then apply an antibacterial ointment, like Neosporin. Deeper cuts may need stitches.

For anything put into the ear canal itself, try seeing your pediatrician. They may be able to remove the object, or they may send your child to see an ear, nose and throat specialist, or ENT.

For children who had something hit their ear and there is a lot of swelling, you should take them in right away. There can be blood building up under the skin surface that needs to be relieved. Waiting too long in this case can lead to significant unwanted scarring.

Most of the time children's ear injuries can be taken care of at home with soap and water. However, if there is any question, see your pediatrician.
