Pancreatic cancer is a cancer of the pancreas, a small organ found behind your stomach. In pancreatic cancer, cancer cells form a tumor in the pancreas, which interferes with the normal function of the organ and can spread to other parts of the body.
The pancreas is part of the digestive system, making enzymes needed for digestion. It also produces hormones that help your body use sugars. In stage 1 pancreatic cancer, a cancerous tumor has formed in the pancreas, but the cancer has not spread to other areas of the body.
In stage I, cancer has formed, but is confined to the pancreas only. Stage I is divided into stage IA and stage IB depending on the size of the tumor.
Stage IA: The tumor is 2 centimeters or smaller and found in the pancreas only.
Stage IB: The tumor is larger than 2 centimeters and is found in the pancreas only
