answer

Lithium is approved for the treatment of bipolar disorder. Sometimes, lithium is prescribed to treat conditions for which it is not an FDA-approved treatment, which are called "off-label" uses. These uses may not be approved for a variety of reasons - they may have greater side effects, or the efficacy of treatment may not yet be proven.

Lithium is used off-label to treat the following diseases:

  • Depression
  • Graves' disease
  • Migraine headaches
  • Cluster headaches
  • Agitation
  • Neutropenia, or low white blood cell count
  • Syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion, or SIADH, which causes abnormal blood sodium level
