What are foaming agents?

Foaming agents are used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). They cover the contents of your stomach with a thick layer of foam so that stomach contents cannot enter the esophagus and create reflux. An example of a brand name product containing the foaming agent alginic acid is Gaviscon.
