How do peptic ulcers affect the body?

Peptic ulcers can develop complications if left untreated.

  • A bleeding ulcer may cause anemia or low blood pressure.
  • If the ulcer is severe enough to create a hole in your stomach wall or small intestine, an infection can occur and must be treated immediately.
  • Some ulcers cause scarring or swelling and block the opening into the small intestine. This may cause vomiting, or it may cause a feeling of fullness that leads to decreased appetite and weight loss.
