answer

As Dr. Oz mentioned in his answer, it does help--when you or your loved one have time---to communicate proactively with your doctor if you are going to the emergency room.  That way, you are one step closer to creating better continuity of care for yourself. Your doctor can call the ER staff and share pertinent clinical information about you with the ER doctor.

If you're lucky enough that your primary doctor is 'on staff' at the same hospital whose ER you're going to, and the hospital has an electronic medical record, your doctor may even be able to access your ER records while you're in the ER.

The best reason to notify your doctor or his/her office is that if you are admitted from that same visit to the ER and then discharged, chances are your doctor will never know you've been in the hospital unless you tell him.
