Want the secret to better brain health as you age? Have a sense of purpose. In one study, older adults with a strong sense of purpose were less likely to develop Alzheimer's disease, explains Robin Miller, MD.
Hi, I'm Dr. Miller. Want the secret to better brain health as you age? Have a sense of purpose. In one study, older adults who had a strong sense of purpose in their lives were less likely to develop Alzheimer disease or cognitive impairment. Why? For one, having purpose means your actions and choices are guided by specific goals and desires.
For another, it helps you look for meanings in personal event and experiences. Researchers think this can help to positively alter your immune system in a way that helps your heart and blood vessel. Your goals can be career related or personal, like trying to be a better parent, spouse or friend. You can aim to be more present in the moment, whatever you decide, your mind and body will thank you for setting strong personal goals or philosophy.
