What is the P90X?

Tony Horton

Fitness expert and creator of the P90X fitness program, Tony Horton, describes the P90X fitness program. Watch Tony's video for tips and information on fitness, health and wellness.

I have done P90X, and it is a great program for those that are not new to fitness. P90X® has 12 highly diverse and intense workouts. It's a total-body program that incorporates strength training, cardio, core work, yoga, and flexibility. The Muscle confusion concept that it supports does help you get through plateaus, which everyone faces in their fitness routine.

With that being said, it is also designed and geared towards people that are in better than average shape. If you are a beginner, or in poor shape and overweight or obese, this is NOT a program you should be indulging in. The SEVERELY overweight before and after photos are not the results of 90 days. Those are typically results of someone that has done multiple 90 day rounds of P90X. As a coach for Beach body, and a personal trainer I would NEVER offer up P90X for a person new to fitness or is extremely overweight, that's irresponsible, and setting up the client for severe injury and failure. Remember the slogan "If it's too good to be true, it is." Just like ANY fitness routine though it takes commitment and good ole fashioned sweat to be affective.

P90x is a at-home workout program developed by Tony Horton. The system is based on the principle of specificity. He utilizes this principle as a strategy to overcome plateau's that can commonly occur in unplanned workout programs. The tools that the system utilizes is a 12 DVD set that includes training programs for muscle development, cardiovascular enhancement, and flexibility. A food plan also comes with the program and a workout calendar.

As with any workout program of this nature it is important to look at the most important principle: Individualism. It would be advised if you want to utilize P90x that you consult with a coach that can progress or regress the program for your individual needs.

P90X is a well-marketed training system which highlights the principle of specificity which they describe as "muscle confusion." The popularity of the program stems from the fact that it organizes workouts into a planned sequence to help ensure consistent physiological changes.
