The core is an overall muscle group that can have many different functions.  One of the most important functions is stabilization (within the lumbopelvic hip complex).  By providing this stabilization during activity, we can reduce back pain, injury and provide more overall power to our extremities.  Core stabilization focuses on keeping the hips and pelvis even and stable during activity.  This can be as simple as a leg slide while lying supine (on your back), or more complex such as utilizing the drawing in maneuver while doing box jumps.  All core work needs to start with the drawing in maneuver, by gently pulling your belly button towards your spine and engaging your core musculature.  These are the muscles that will hold your pelvis and spine in proper alignment while you are doing your activity.  It is best to start with floor exercises and progress to using a stability ball, bosu and single leg activity.
Core stabilization is the ability to maintain proper spinal and pelvic alignment of the body while performing daily tasks. The core contracts every time any part of the body moves. A strong core that helps prevent unwanted movement of the spine and pelvis is important efficient and safe movement.
