Why is tempo important during exercise?

Tempo provides the count for the key movements in an exercise. A 3-1-3 tempo requires you to count to three as you lift a weight, pause for one beat, then count to three as you lower the weight. To avoid hurrying, it helps to count while watching or listening to seconds tick by on a clock. When you can no longer maintain the recommended tempo, stop that particular exercise even if you haven't finished all of the reps.
