Should I worry about my 13 year old drinking alcohol?

Absolutely you should be worried. First of all it is illegal for a thirteen year old to consume alcohol. Second of all it is dangerous for a teenager to be drinking. Consuming alcohol at a young age can lead to smoking cigarettes and experimenting with drugs. You should confront your child now about drinking and if it continues talk to the school counselor and other parents of his friends. If that does not work, family therapy would be recommended.

A new survey shows that about 6% of children between the ages of 12 to 14 are drinking alcohol on a regular basis. This survey was performed by the HHS’ Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration provides some insights. Researcher Peter Delany stated that “Ninety-three percent of the kids got the alcohol for free. About 45 percent were getting it from home. Either a parent or guardian gave it to them, or another relative gave it to them, or they were taking it.’’ Delany says younger drinkers are more likely to grow up to be problem drinkers. He says parents should start talking with their kids long before they start drinking and need to continue the conversations.
