Why should I hold weights with an open-hand grip?

An open-hand grip is a grip in which the thumb does not wrap around the bar. Many fitness enthusiasts prefer this grip as it allows you to be more relaxed during the exercise. By relaxing the hand you are creating a more relaxed environment to exercise. Over gripping the bar can also lead to overuse injuries such as carpal tunnel syndrome and pronator syndrome. These injuries are caused from muscles that compress a nerve and cause pain and weakness in the hand.
