How are adolescent sports injuries diagnosed?

Great question --- sports injuries occur frequently in adolescents. Most injuries are due to a traumatic force, such as twisting an ankle or knee, or repetitive use such as throwing a ball. The injury is diagnosed by taking a complete medical history of the adolescent’s physical activity or traumatic incident. After obtaining the medical history, a physical exam should be performed and a decision is made whether additional diagnostic studies, such as an x-ray, or there is a need for consultation with orthopedic surgeon or physical therapist.
