How will kinesiology tape affect my range of motion?

Unlike traditional taping methods, kinesiology tape does not restrict range of motion but instead allows for full action and range of motion while providing structural support. It also aims to reduce muscle fatigue and increase muscle contraction. Kinesiology tape can be applied before practice and left on during practice and even throughout the day. Kinesiology tape is designed to provide therapeutic relief by stimulating the superficial lymphatic system which aids in the reduction of inflammation and thus swelling.

There are other claims about the benefits of kinesiology tape (such as reaching deeper tissues, promoting full performance). However, there is little evidence for these claims backed by scientific research at this time. (This answer provided for NATA by the Saint Louis University Athletic Training Education Program.)

Kinesiology tape is designed to provide structure while minimizing range of motion limitation in order to encourage healing and discourage atrophy buildup. By adjusting tension in the application, range of motion can be adjusted in order to avoid pain points within normal range of motion. Tension adjustment allows the practitioner to customize the taping application to meet the specific client's injury needs.
