What protein foods should I avoid on the FODMAP elimination diet?
Patsy Catsos
Nutrition & Dietetics

The FODMAPS elimination diet is based on limiting "FODMAPS" in the diet. FODMAPS stands for Fermentable Oligo-, Di- and Mono-saccharides And Polyols. Specifically, some of the dietary carbohydrates described by the term FODMAPS are lactose, fructose, fructans, polyols and galactans. These are sugars, starches and fibers in food that some people cannot fully digest and absorb.

Please read labels carefully and avoid the following protein foods:

  • Beans including baked beans, refried beans, kidney, pinto, black, edamame, lima, butter, navy, or garbanzo or any other dried beans, chick peas, black-eyed peas or any other dried peas (check soups, dips such as hummus, frozen meals, salads)
  • Soy beans or soy products such as tofu, soy milk, tempeh (check vegetarian convenience foods, beverages)
  • Lentils, including brown, yellow and red lentils (check soups, dal)
  • Milk (unless it is pre-treated with lactase), nonfat dry milk powder, buttermilk or buttermilk solids
