Why do people with schizophrenia have trouble with their hygiene?

People with schizophrenia often have trouble with personal hygiene in addition to many other daily life functions, due to the negative symptoms associated with schizophrenia. Negative symptoms can cause a great amount of difficulty for people living with schizophrenia. Examples of negative symptoms of schizophrenia include:

• Speaking in a flat, dull tone
• Social withdrawal and isolation
• A lack of interest in daily life or hobbies
• An inability to complete daily tasks

Because many people with schizophrenia are unable to maintain a daily routine and have trouble completing basic functions, they may not bathe or shower on a regular basis, nor do laundry, and they might wear the same clothes day after day.
