How is food poisoning from salmonella treated?

Dr. Jeanne Morrison, PhD
Family Practitioner

Usually, treatment for Salmonella food poisoning is simple and cost effective. Diarrhea causes dehydration, and increasing your fluid intake will help alleviate your symptoms. Occasionally, antidiarrheals can be used to combat especially bad cramps; however, they may make your diarrhea last longer than it otherwise would. Antibiotics are prescribed if the Salmonella bacteria have spread to the bloodstream.
