Protection from hepatitis B infection begins with the first injection, but it is critical you complete the schedule of booster shots to ensure full immunity. If you are exposed to hepatitis B before you get vaccinated, or during the window between vaccination and full protection, you can get a special shot within 24 hours of exposure that will provide short-term protection. This is called hepatitis B immunoglobulin and it provides protection for three to six months, enough time to get started on the standard series of three vaccinations.
