How can I have a healthier lifestyle?

You can sense, increase and direct the body’s supply of prana to improve your health—if you have the proper training. Prana is a living force; it has consciousness. It can be built up and consciously controlled. There is a saying in chi kung practice: “The chi follows the yi.” Chi is, as explained earlier, a synonym for universal life force. We don’t have a perfectly equivalent word for yi in English, but it refers to the mind or intent. Thus, the rough translation is: “energy follows thought”; prana goes where you intend it to go.

10-Day Boot Camp for a Healthier Lifestyle:

  • Avoid processed foods, fast food, refined sugar, hydrogenated fats and white flour. Go organic wherever possible.
  • Schedule at least 30 minutes of physical exercise at least 7 of those 10 days. If you can, do 60 minutes total on your exercise days.
  • Cut out all soda and juices. Opt for plain water or sparkling mineral water.
  • Do not consume any caffeine after 2 p.m. in the afternoon. Minimize or avoid alcohol.
  • Set strict boundaries between work and play. Avoid work within two hours of bed, including household chores, and leave one weekend day for goofing off.
  • Get however much sleep you need each night to feel refreshed the next day; go to bed and rise at the same exact time each day—weekends included.

You can create a version of this boot camp for your kids, too, and put them up to the challenge.

The short answer to this question is: Eat natural foods in small amounts. You'd be amazed how much everything in your life would rally around such a simple modification. But just because it's simple doesn't mean that it's easy.

The more in-depth response to this question relates to building a lifestyle that centers on spiritual growth. This can happen through a number of different systems, though my work happens to be based on the ancient Indian systems of Yoga and Ayurveda. These sister programs call on us to first balance the body through a diet of simple, natural foods, supplementing these foods with balancing herbs, remaining open and flexible in the body through the practice of yoga postures and doing other things that help the body to be healthy.

Once the body is healthy, then we work on the mind. We use the yogic practices of breathing, concentration and other techniques to shift our mind away from negative, destructive emotions and instead experience more peaceful thoughts and experiences. From here, we begin to realize our spirit, which allows us to live not just in peace but total bliss.

To have a healthier lifestyle and promote overall health, you'll need more healthful nutrition habits as well as changes in other lifestyle habits. These changes include cutting back on sedentary and screen time, eating fewer fast-food meals or meals out of the home and more family meals prepared in the home. Numerous studies have concluded that diet and exercise programs combined work more effectively than either one alone.

Lifestyle modification strategies can include healthier eating, exercise and physical activity; getting adequate sleep; reducing stress; and seeking spiritual fulfillment. However, it's important to remember that no two people are the same, and your strategies should best suit your life and goals.

The best way to improve your health is to eat a healthy diet, achieve a healthy level of fitness and a normal weight and never smoke or quit smoking if you do. For many years we have known that the majority of premature deaths in the US are related to lifestyle choices.

The major culprits are tobacco, poor diet and lack of physical activity in that order. The remainder of deaths related to lifestyle can be attributed to alcohol, infection, toxins, guns, sexually transmitted diseases, motor vehicle accidents and drugs.

Despite all the gains that we have made in medicine, health ultimately comes down to each and every one of us and the choices that we make.
