The Affordable Care Act (ACA) offers rights and protections with respect to pre-existing conditions. A history of cancer is one example of a pre-existing condition. In general, you cannot be denied health insurance coverage or benefits if you have a pre-existing condition.
There is one exception and it is for what is called "grand-fathered individual health insurance plans". These are plans that were created before the Affordable Care Act became law. They are purchased by individuals and not through your employer.
This exception does not apply to the individual health insurance plans sold on the Health Insurance Marketplace. For more information on how to obtain these ACA-compliant plans, please visit healthcare.gov
