answer

Several things can help with the pain from a vaginal tear or episiotomy (incision made by your birth attendant to ease delivery). Ice packs placed on the area for 15 minutes at a time several times a day may help, especially in the first day. A warm water sitz bath (a small basin with warm water that has a hose attached to a bag that allows fresh water to "bubble" into the basin) may be used after the first 24 hours have passed and promotes healing as well as providing comfort. Topical treatments can be used also. Some over-the-counter medications that can be purchased at your local pharmacy that can help are witch hazel pads (especially if kept cold in the refrigerator), hydrocortisone cream, and Dermoplast spray. You can apply these as directed on the package after you have cleaned your perianal area and then apply a clean pad. You can also continue to take ibuprofen as directed by your healthcare provider as this can help to decrease swelling and pain. Severe pain lasting more than a week or two after delivery should be reported to your healthcare provider so that they can examine you to be sure that there are no complications.
