Dx Dialogues: what I'm most excited about in type 1 diabetes research - beta cell "factories" and gene editing
Sandra Sobel, MD, talks about the things she's most excited for in type 1 diabetes research - beta cell "factories" and gene editing.
Transcript
What I'm really most excited about on the horizon in the type I diabetes space is just the explosion of research
and the results that are being published on the success of gene edited beta cell therapies, these beta cell factories coming
from stem cells. Because the truth is, we have millions of individuals
living with type 1 diabetes. And it is absolutely necessary that if we are going to try to provide them with a cure,
we need to have enough beta cells available for all of these individuals. It's really important that these beta cell factories
have the funding they need to produce viable and safe beta cells for our patients. I'm also very excited about the gene editing technologies,
where these therapies that are being offered to individuals can be done in a way that can evade the immune response
from an individual's own immune system without them needing to rely on immunosuppression therapy. [EASY LISTENING MUSIC]
