Dx Dialogues: autoantibody tests and the importance of early-stage detection of T1D
Sanda Sobel, MD, explains how autoantibody tests can help assess a patient's risk for type 1 diabetes, before they present in diabetic ketoacidosis.
Transcript
Traditionally in the diagnosis of type 1 diabetes, we had to wait until an individual presented in diabetic ketoacidosis.
[MUSIC PLAYING] We now can screen for type 1 diabetes using blood tests that
are checking for antibodies, zinc transporter 8, GAD65, insulin autoimmune antibody, as well
as the islet cell antigen. We can now capture individuals who are at risk prior to the progression
of diabetic ketoacidosis. Ultimately, the goal is in earlier detection of type
1 diabetes in stage 1 or stage 2, we can preserve beta cell mass for longer. [AUDIO LOGO]
