What do injectable fillers do?

Injectable fillers are cosmetic products that dermatologists use to fill in wrinkles and creases in the face that tend to develop with age. Jeanine Downie, MD, discusses how injectable fillers work to make skin look younger.

So a lot of people will ask me questions about what fillers do and what are fillers, and fillers are Juvederm, Restylane, Perlane, Belotero

in your face, and that's not a good thing. We lose a teaspoon of volume, collagen that is, from our face every year from the time we're 30,

so it's not until we get into our 40s and 50s that actually we notice a difference. Your face starts sagging. Your skin doesn't look as full.

We're trying to exercise to keep the fat off of our rear ends. We wind up losing fat from our faces that makes us look older and gaunt.

So just a little bit with somebody that delicately knows how to do it without overdoing it is something that I would truly recommend.

It's made me feel younger and look younger as well, and I tell people that I do it well, I do it with restraint,

and I've been doing it for about 20 years to my patients. So I have a lot of experience with that. Filler is one of my favorite things to do because it's instant and it's very, very gratifying.

It must be done by a board certified dermatologist or plastic surgeon that knows what they're doing, not somebody that just took a weekend course.
