BIPOC + LGBTQIA patients and why education is needed
Education is crucial in addressing healthcare access inequities and promoting inclusive and equitable care for all. Experts discuss systemic changes that need to happen to address disparities for LGBTQIA+ patients and patients of color.

I just had so many inequity and disparity issues with my own health care access, as a Black man, as a queer man.
[GUITAR MUSIC] We can talk about race and we know
a spotlight is very much been placed on racial inequities, but what about also involving the LGBTQIA community, right?
What global system structural changes do you feel like are missing in the conversation?
And what needs to happen acutely, and then what needs to happen in the long-term setting?
LGBT health is a very-- it's taboo, in a sense, Dr. Hilton.
Because you have to think that those medical doctors that got their medical degrees from, say, the 1960s to present,
they were not required to have LGBT health or affirming health care or any of these aspects that we're trying to entrench
and trying to make a part of their system. Whether it's like continuing education credits or certification credits and things like that
in that nature, none of them have that extra added unless they made the effort to find it in their medical career
and getting their degree. And so that, for one, is an immediate step. You have to think of what curriculum looks like for them
to be able to address and affirm their clientele who identify within the LGBTQ+ and Two Spirit space.
Without that, all of the extra work that we do in public health means nothing.
Because you continue the same systemic disadvantages and disparities for that community. And this goes the same with race.
It's entrenched in the curriculum and what you require of them.
A liberal arts school is going to require this. The public schools will require this. Medical school is going to require this. If you don't add those components to it,
you're basically saying that same doctor from 1950 can be the same doctor in 2022.
