The law of similars is fundamental to the practice of homeopathy. This tenet states that a substance that causes a certain set of symptoms in a healthy person will have a curative effect when given to a sick person who is displaying similar symptoms. "Let likes be cured with likes, " is the phrase termed by Samuel Hahnemann, the scientist who founded homeopathy over 200 years ago. In conventional medicine, this same concept is used in the development of vaccinations. Small doses of the agents that cause the disease are used to immunize the patient against the disease.

The law of similars (“like cures like”) is one of the basic principles of homeopathy. Conventional medicine is based on the law of contraries: for example, give an antipyretic (antifever) drug for a fever, or an antihistamine (secretion-drying drug) for a runny nose.
On the face of it, this conventional approach makes much more sense. But symptoms like fever or a runny nose are not the underlying problem. Symptoms like this are part of the body’s way of fighting the underlying problem. A fever stimulates white blood cell activity (immune activity), while nasal secretions can help eliminate viruses in the nose. Both are part of nature’s way of healing.
Forcing the body not to have these symptoms is like blocking the little jiggler valve on the top of a pressure cooker. If you block that valve, the pressure inside has nowhere to go and the pressure cooker could explode.
In the body, if you block a symptom, the body has to find another way to deal with its health imbalance.
A homeopathic remedy really addresses the underlying cause. It supports the body in its way of fighting the cause so that it can be resolved quickly. Instead of saying “Don’t have a fever” it says “Let me address this fever-causing illness so you don’t need the fever any more.”
The result is that people who use homeopathic remedies typically get better quicker and are less likely to relapse.
You could do an experiment with yourself. Try treating a cold or flu with homeopathic remedies. See if you bounce back quicker than usual. The remedies are safe. The worst that can happen is that they simply don’t work.

In homeopathy, the law of similars says that "like cures like." In this video, naturopathic doctor Lisa Samet, ND, explains how a substance that will produce symptoms in a healthy person can actually cure those same symptoms in an ill person.
