What is an Intrauterine Device or an IUD? An Intrauterine Device is a device that we place inside the uterus to prevent pregnancy. The way that IUDs work is that once it's inside the uterus there are two types. One has progesterone in it and the other one has copper. It is believed that the copper will inactivate the sperm thus preventing fertilization. The progesterone IUD is also works by the same way making not only the lining really not conducive for it to be fertilized, but most importantly it also prevent the sperm from fertilizing the egg.

So unlike other myths about abortion it does not create an abortion and actually no fertilization actually takes place.
