Hugs boost happiness because they stimulate the release of oxytocin which is nature's feel good, warm, fuzzy hormone that produces this feelings of trust and generosity and of course happiness. So the clincher is that it needs to be a long hug or a lingering hug, it's just a quick pat on the back will stimulate the release of some oxytocin that probably not as much as you want.
